Job Purpose

Buist is a large electrical contracting, technology, and engineering firm providing a comprehensive range of services to our clients. This position is focused on power system studies and will involve working alongside our electrical engineers and testing engineers to develop designs, drawings, analysis, and reports for a variety of electrical systems. The ideal candidate is an early-career engineer with 2–5 years of experience who has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and support power system studies, including:
    • Short circuit analysis
    • Protective device coordination studies
    • Arc flash hazard analysis (per NFPA 70E / IEEE 1584)
    • Power quality correction
    • Harmonics analysis
    • Load flow and voltage drop analysis
    • Motor starting studies
  • Interpret specs and develop electrical designs for building systems, including:
    • One-line and riser diagrams
    • Panel schedules and load calculations
    • Protective device settings and coordination
  • Prepare technical reports, study deliverables, and project closeout documentation
  • Review and approve power analysis reports based on meter-collected power quality results
  • Conduct field investigations and data collection
  • Perform peer reviews of drawings, specifications, and engineering calculations
  • Participate in project meetings with internal teams, clients, and other stakeholders
  • Support customer presentations and on-site training sessions
  • Interpret specs and customer inquiries, design technical proposals, and pricing for customers
  • Work closely with project managers to meet project schedules and deliverables
  • Provide applied engineering and technical consultation for customers in the areas of power systems studies, design, installation, startup, maintenance, repair, and training
  • Self-management of assigned projects and job cost accountability to perform work within budgeted cost estimates
  • Ability to run small to medium studies and projects unassisted

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • 2–5 years of electrical engineering experience, with exposure to power systems or electrical construction
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam passed; PE licensure in progress or intended
  • Experience preparing arc flash study reports
  • Proficiency with power system analysis software (e.g., SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, IEEE color series)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Work Hours

  • Standard schedule: Monday through Friday, first shift
  • Occasional flexibility may be required to support field work or project deadlines

Work Conditions

  • Primarily office-based in a temperature-controlled environment
  • Periodic field visits to client sites and construction locations
