Buist recently completed a large 30,000 sq.ft. Design/Build remodel project with Perrigo at their Allegan location. This space breaks down into 9,200 sq.ft. of warehouse space, 6,900 sq.ft. of clean equipment storage space, 9,700 sq.ft. of mechanical areas, and 3,800 sq.ft. of production suites. With the original warehouse being 40 ft tall, a second story was added. This second level now provides space for storing clean equipment and a material lift (elevator) was installed to safely transport clean equipment. Large amounts of conduit, lighting, and power were reworked and relocated to make room for the steel and concrete for the new 2nd floor.
This renovated room now houses a new Glatt. A Glatt is a type of fluid bed granulator used for mixing the powder used in medications. Active ingredients can be sprayed on to the powder granules and dried in the same process. This system is a huge time saver for Perrigo, they use it to mix the ingredients for the powder to be compressed into tablets, and granules to be installed in capsules. The base of the Glatt is in the 1st floor suite but runs up through the 2nd floor, into the mechanical penthouse above the 2nd floor, and through the roof. The Glatt has an explosion chamber that would exhaust through the roof in case of a dust explosion.
Buist’s Engineering, Electrical, Automation, and Communications departments were a part of this project. The long lasting relationship between Perrigo and Buist continues to strengthen as we are able to work together to complete projects that bring benefits to both companies.
