Buist is glad to have been a part of the renovation project at SpartanNash’s Headquarters located in Byron Center. The aim of this project was to modernize their building that was originally constructed in 1976. Buist’s Communications, Service, Outdoor Utilities, Audio Visual, Automation, Security, and Prefabrication Departments were all contracted on this 18-month long project. The final upgraded facility now consists of LED lighting, unique fixtures, and state-of-the-art technology.
Buist’s Communications Department had a unique role and experience with this project. The team completed all the low voltage work for the renovation. Throughout this project over 80 miles of fiber optic and copper network cabling were installed. Work included replacing all network infrastructure within the Server Room and multiple IDF’s while maintaining 100% uptime network connectivity in the facility for business operations. The Communications team also installed over 100 new wireless access points throughout the entire facility for 100% coverage.
Maintaining 100% uptime for the facility was important as not only were employees working on site within the building in different areas, but the Server Room and backbone network infrastructure within the facility support all Distribution Centers and stores across North America. Any network outage or disruption in service would have been unacceptable.
Phases 2 and 3 were on a very tight schedule of just 8 weeks to have the project completed in time for SpartanNash’s grand re-opening and for welcoming the SpartanNash employees into their new office spaces. All trades worked well together and were able to successfully meet the ambitious 8-week deadline. After the grand re-opening, the new spaces were soon occupied by team members who moved back to in-person work. The Buist team continued to work amongst a full building of SpartanNash employees during normal and off-shift hours as necessary during Phase 4 to complete the project.
The newly remodeled SpartanNash Headquarters now offers not only a variety of unique workspaces and meeting rooms, but also shuffleboard, foosball, air hockey, ping pong tables, billiards, soft serve ice cream and popcorn machines, and a large café with a professional chef and multiple sous chefs. In addition to these features, the new SpartanNash facility also includes its own Starbucks location.
During construction of this project, SpartanNash broke the world record for most food products used to spell out a word. The team spelled the word “SPARTANNASH” and afterwards, all food used to spell the word was donated to the Buist Community Assistance Center.
