Prefabrication is a valuable tool that helps improve efficiency, quality, and coordination throughout the construction process. With early project involvement, our team can identify opportunities to move portions of work into a controlled shop environment, reducing jobsite challenges and supporting project schedules. Buist works closely with general contractors, construction managers, and engineers to ensure prefabricated components are built to meet each project’s specific needs.

In-House Completion

Buist houses 15,000 sq.ft. of dedicated prefabrication space at our facility in Byron Center, Michigan. Four full-time prefabrication technicians operate out of this space. Our experienced team completes the entire process in-house, allowing for greater control over quality, efficiency, and consistency.

Strategy

Each project is evaluated individually to ensure prefabrication is only leveraged where it adds value, schedule compression, space constraints, labor distribution, or site efficiency. Prefabrication is built into design phases from day one on both design build and design assist projects. We engage as early as possible, often before preconstruction kickoff, to identify opportunities for prefabrication before the window closes. Prefabrication can be valuable in both large and small projects, but if prefab won’t add clear value, we’ll tell you.

Our Prefabrication Process

Buist integrates LEAN processes into prefabrication planning to ensure materials, equipment, and installation move through the project in an organized and predictable manner. Early coordination is key for project teams, field crews, and trades to review layouts, install approaches, and prefabrication opportunities before work begins. We plan materials, equipment, and assemblies around the project before arriving on-site. The electrical components are prepared in our prefabrication shop to support the field teams and reduce unnecessary handling of materials on-site. The materials and prefabricated parts are staged and organized before delivery to properly line up with the project phases. Prefabrication components are labeled and bundled by install zone so crews can move directly from receiving to installation.
