Buist Electric recently completed the renovation of the 8th floor of the Meijer Heart Center for Corewell Health. This marks one of the first projects Buist has done for Corewell Health under its new name, as it was previously known as Spectrum Health. The existing floor was fully renovated into a new 24-bed Critical Care intensive care unit (ICU). The renovations were complete within the fully functioning hospital which presented unique challenges in maintaining a construction environment above an occupied patient floor.
The new floor was built with pandemic isolation capabilities, which allows this floor to be fully isolated from the rest of the hospital. In the case pandemic isolation is needed, separate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units can be activated, allowing the floor to be airlocked and isolated from the rest of the hospital. The floor has a unique virtual ICU system for around-the-clock monitoring by physicians, specially trained critical care nurses, and other clinicians through high-resolution cameras, microphones, and electronic medical devices. Additionally, the newly renovated 8th floor is equipped with three electrical rooms, multiple HVAC units, and each room is equipped with eight critical power units in each head wall. The newly renovated floor also includes nurse aid stations, office spaces, and an employee break room.
Our team worked closely with the general contractor, The Christman Company, to ensure that all aspects of the project were completed safely and according to the design specifications. This project was completed in March 2023, following 16 months of construction.
