WEST MICHIGAN BEEF

Hudsonville, MI

Buist Electric was the electrical contractor for the construction of West Michigan Beef’s new facility. Buist was a Design Build partner on this project and provided all Electrical, Audio Visual, Communications, Outdoor Utilities, Security Solutions, and Testing services. The new 67,000-square-foot facility replaces their old buildings, parts of which were 100 years old, tripling their old working space and roughly doubling their processing capabilities to meet the increase in demand for local meat.

The new facility contains a slaughter line, processing line, multiple freezers, shipping areas, offices, conference rooms, locker rooms, and a kitchen and break area. Buist’s scope of work consisted of supplying all temporary power and lighting throughout the project. While also providing and installing the full-lighting package and the full-lighting control package. Additionally, Buist installed (1) customer-owned medium voltage pad mount transformer, (1) customer-owned primary switch, (1) 2500A main distribution panel, (1) 600A motor control center, (7) various panels to support distribution, and (4) 75KVA transformers.

The team provided power to all HVAC equipment, refrigeration chillers and pumps, dock levelers, and charging stations. (51) 480V power drops were provided and installed for equipment connections. (20) 120V power drops were provided and installed in the processing area.

Buist also provided a 200KW generator, generator panels, automatic transfer switches, and an additional 2500A service-rated ATS/docking station for a standby generator when it comes in as part of a future addition.

Backup power was crucial to this project as maintaining power and ensuring facility uptime is essential for West Michigan Beef. Any loss of power could result in lost products and unsafe processing conditions. The conduit in the facility is a mix of steel and PVC to meet the food-grade quality requirements. Buist is proud to be a part of a project that brings growth and expansion to a local West Michigan business.
